Fossil Pine Cone
A fossilised Pine Cone of the Araucaria tree, discovered in Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina.
It dates from the Jurassic Period, 200 to 145 million years old, and it has been split and polished to show the beauty of the internal structure.
The Araucaria was an ancient species of tree, which dates back to the time of the dinosaurs.
The pine cone was well preserved, as, millions of years ago, the forest was covered in volcanic ash.
The tree is related to the modern day Monkey Puzzle Tree.
This comes from an old collection, as Argentina has recently banned collecting, and fossil exports from these sites.
A beautiful piece of natural art
