NEOASAPHUS TRILOBITE

Product description

Neoasaphus kowalewskii, was an amazing stalk eyed trilobite, dating from the Ordovician Period, 485 to 443 million years ago. It is a species of the trilobite genus Asaphus, of which 35 separate species have been discovered.
Neoasaphus is only found in the area of the Wolchow River, St Petersburg, N.W. Russia.

During the Ordovician Period an inland sea existed in what is now Eastern Europe.

It is thought that these trilobites evolved with long eyestalks, to enable them to bury themselves in the loose sediment at the bottom, with only their eyestalks protruding above, looking for prey, or any danger to themselves.

This is a hugely entertaining and original fossil.

The trilobite is 2.5 inches long, in original matrix.
