Neoproscinetes Fish

Product description

A rare and outstanding Neoproscinetes penalvai Pycnodont fish, discovered in the Santana Formation, Brazil. It dates from the Lower Cretaceous, and is 110 million years old.

Neoproscinetes is an uncommon fish fossil in the Santana Formation, although a few specimens have also been found in other parts of the world.

When this fish swam in the depths of the Cretaceous seas, Dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

It is a part of an extinct fish group known as Pycnodonts, which means "Dense Tooth".
The fish are typified by their deep, laterally compressed bodies, and their round pebble-like teeth, which were used to crush armored prey, such as small crustaceans, like crabs, shrimp, and snails.

The Santana Formation is to be found in North East Brazil, in the Araripe Basin. The strata were laid down during the early Cretaceous Period.
The location produces exceptionally well preserved and diverse fauna & Flora. Over 25 species of fish are known, along with pterosaurs, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and plants. Many soft parts were preserved during fossilisation.

In the future it will become much more difficult to offer these spectacular fossils, as there are moves afoot to make the formation, and its fossil record, a protected area.

This is an amazing and uncommon fossil fish in super condition.
It is from an old collection. These fossils are getting much harder to obtain now.

A wonderful display in the home or office, also a great addition to a fossil collection, and surely an investment piece.
