Weevil Cocoon
Product description
Weevil cocoons are often called "Clogs" in Australia due to their appearance. They are Pleistocene, up to 100,000 years old, and are specifically from the Weevil, Leptopius duponti. This specimen is from the west coast of Eyre Peninsula, Western Australia.
These cocoons are produced when the beetle larva pupates from larva to adult beetle.
Rather than spin a cocoon, the larva makes a cell in the earth, exuding a secretion that eventually makes the soil or sand set like concrete, leaving these fossilised cocoons for us to discover.
A highly unusual piece.
