Ammonite - rare spiny Heteromorph ammonite

Product description

Age: Cretaceous (90m years old)

Fossil site: Coastal Sahara, Morocco

Description: Whilst most ammonites are enrolled (monomorph), a major group of ammonites emerged during the late Jurassic that had uncoiled shells and these are kwon as heteromorph ammonites. Their uncoiled shells would have made swimming quite difficult and they are likely to have wobbled their way through the water, grabbing whatever prey came within reach. Spiny ammonites were quite rare and it is presumed that the shell ornamentation was for protection from predators.
Not only is this a rare ammonite, which gives it good investment potential, but it is also very attractive, and sympathetically mounted on a stone base.
A beautiful display for the home or office.
