Fossil site: Marecchia River Formation, Poggio Berni, Rimini, Italy
Description: Of all the mysterious, secretive creatures in the ocean, the Sea horse is probably the most legendary. It looks like a creature that could only exist in someone's imagination. Seahorses and Pipe fish belong to the Syngnathidae, a teleost family, dating back some 52 million years. The oldest fossil record for these creatures is to be found in the Tunjuce hills in Solenia, dating back some 13 million years. The fossils from this Italian site are amongst the best to be found and the level of preservation is excellent, showing superb detail of this rare fossil.
This is the only location where these rare fossils are found, and it is now closed. There are very few specimens in existence, so this is your opportunity to own something very rare.
